Do we honour God when we celebrate Christmas?

Its Christmas. All of us have suffered through the masses of people in the malls, and the rows of people at the check outs. And if we are honest, we have worked our way through spending that hard earned bonus and we have possibly done a better job of over spending.

Now I have spent a lot of time looking at what I can only describe as the insanity we call Christmas. It has become a time when most of us lose any semblance of self control. Restaurants do a roaring trade, bottle stores have difficulty keeping up , and retailers are forced to work extended hours to meet the demand.

We race to our holiday destinations and pay ridiculous prices for accommodation. We battle for decent spots on the beach, in restaurants, and other attractions, etc. And yet, come Christmas the churches are empty.

Christmas is the time when Christmas carols are sung, and when we supposedly commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, yet it isn’t reflected. We don’t see any reference to this wondrous event anywhere, or hear it mentioned on television or the radio. I am sorry to say that very few parents share the true christmas story with their children.

I am not saying that we shouldn’t buy gifts, or have special gatherings with friends or family. What I am saying is that we should use this occasion to remember and remind people that we celebrate the greatest gift of all on this day. God send His Son, to become man in order to eventually save mankind by becoming a sacrifice for us.

However we have resorted to celebrating this original pagan holiday, the same way they did, and we have allowed it to became another opportunity to over spend, over indulge, and in many cases drink too much, and in the process we have lost the true meaning of Christmas.

Let us who love God, celebrate Christmas, and let’s do so joyfully, while reflecting on our Heavenly Father’s love for us. Let’s reflect the real meaning of Christmas. Let us put Christ at the centre of our celebrations, and let us do so joyfully!Merry Christmas!!
